Yacht classes

The following classes of boats are sailed by a great number of very enthusiastic club members. Club racing is every Saturday throughout the summer sailing season (September - April) come rain or gales. Junior racing is in the morning, and senior racing in the afternoons. An autumn series is held throughout May, with one race sailed each Sunday.

The optimist is the boat that children from 8 - 15 learn to sail in. Worser Bay Boating Club has a large fleet of optimist sailors, with club racing every Saturday through the sailing season, and a race squad for those sailors who want more racing experience to compete in regattas at national levels. sunburst

Sunburst

Sunbursts are the largest fleet at Worser Bay, with racing on Saturday afternoons. There are generally two races in succession. First start at about 13:00hrs which is a ladder race with a mark foy start. (Boats start in succession according to their handicap. Slowest get away first. Every one finishes at the same time ... theoretically!) The second race (after a cup of tea) is a series race, with every one starting on the gun.
Lunch is available at the club from midday. The bar opens after the second race. Get down to the club by Saturday midday and get great racing in a big fleet. To be on the beach and ready to go you should aim to arrive about 11:45am, preferably earlier for visitors who wish to organise something.
There are over 104 sunbursts registered in the Wellington region. You will need to be a member to compete in regional and national regattas.

skiffs

Skiff sailors, or 'Skiffheads', are a breed unto their own at Worser Bay. This season there will be four brave crew of skiffheads sailing at great speed through the rest of the fleet on any Saturday. You can find them most Saturdays at the club, rigging up on the beach. The yachts are a huge amount of fun to sail (so says Steve Hogg) and not nearly as expensive as perceptions would suggest. Their challenge to you is - " give it a try!" (Adapted from the Almanac).
